A father-and-son migration odyssey across Europe, in the vein of Italian Neorealism

It’s time for another Visionär appointment: on the 28th of November 8 PM at IL KINO, we present Mein Vater (Babai – Father) by Visar Morina. The film received Best Director Award at Karlovy Vary. After the film, a Skype Call with the director will follow.

Babai explores the story of Nori (Val Maloku) and his father Gezim (Astrit Kabashi), both street cigarette vendors in Kosovo during the Milosevic regime. The father wants to find a way to illegally migrate to Germany without his son, yet Nori does anything to be with his father. Caught between the wish to live together and a need to deal with the harsh reality, the father-son relationship comes to a point where nothing between them is as it used to be.

Mein Vater (Babai – Father) is a migration odyssey story set when the war in former Yugoslavia had not yet broken out, and ends in Germany where a father tries at any costs to escape poverty, but finds nothing more than misery. The adult world is depicted in its failure to protect children and their childhood. Kids are nothing more than a useless ballast.  In this timely refugee tale, the Kosovar director Visar Morina puts at the center of the scene a tormented relationship between a neglectful father and his daring and stubborn child. Central is also Nori’s gaze, a stoic kid whose only need is not to be abandoned by his father and who observes attentively a hopeless, violent and tragic world.  In an updated neo-realistic approach – the reference to Ladri di biciclette di Vittorio De Sica comes along rather effectively – Morina reminds us that kids are observing us.
