Preview screening: Girl

Visionär is happy to present a special preview of GIRL – a movie by Lukas Dhont. A compelling transgender drama about a teenager who “just wants to be a girl”, which was a true Cannes discovery.

The 15-year-old Lara dreams of becoming a ballerina, she is training hard to get into a top dance academy and will push her body to its limits in order for her dream to succeed. Her adolescent frustrations and impatience are heightened as she realizes her body does not bend so easily to the strict discipline – she was born a boy and has not completed her transition yet. Ballet training is already so harsh on a teenage body; you add to this the hormone treatments and the strength necessary to the surgery – Lara is undergoing through a very wrenching reality.

“In simple, unambiguous terms, Dhont delivers an intuitively accessible look at a gender non-conforming teenager trying to find the courage to be herself, relying on a stunning central performance from 15-year-old Victor Polster,” wrote Variety.

GIRL was awarded the Caméra D’Or for Best First Feature Film, the Fipresci Prize and the Canne’s Queer Palm.
Victor Polster, who plays the lead in the film, won the best actor award in Un Certain Regard.
