The Wild Boys
At the beginning of the 20th century on the island of La Réunion, five adolescents of good family, enamored with the occult, commit a savage crime. A Dutch Captain takes them in charge for a repressive cruise on a haunted, dilapidated sailboat. Exhausted by the methods of the Captain, the five boys prepare to mutiny. Their port of call is a supernatural island with luxuriant vegetation and bewitching powers.
Boys free to self-determine without rules; a group projecting sexual violence upon their teacher; a rigid and strange ship captain who should lead them on the right path; the sea voyage; the landing on a mysterious island where everything changes. With Les garçons sauvages, Bertand Mandico creates an extraordinary debut film: Fantastic and dreamlike film, yet naive, lively and pulsating at once. Full of cinematic references absorbed within a style that is truly unique. Jean Genet, Josef von Sternberg, Jean Cocteau, Kenneth Anger, Jean Vigo … A kaleidoscope that attracts, provokes, and destabilizes. A cinema of eros and of the exotic, of the monstrous and the marvelous.

About the Director
Bertrand Mandico wurde 1971 geboren und studierte an der CFT
Gobelins in Paris, wo er 1993 sein Diplom in Animationsfilm erhielt.
Er hat dennoch nur einen einzigen Animationsfilm realisiert, Le
Cavalier Bleu, der ein heidnisches Ritual in einer surrealistischen
Montage in Szene setzt. Seine visuellen Experimente führte Bertrand
in den Miniatur-Kurzfilmen für Arte fort.
Durch das Erschaffen von Zwischenwelten arbeitet er sich an
Filmmaterial und Erzählstoff ab und interpretiert die Genres neu. Er
führte bereits bei zahlreichen Kurzfilmen und Mittellangfilmen Regie
und schrieb auch deren Drehbücher. Seine Filme wurden von vielen
Filmfestivals eingeladen und einige von ihnen prämiert, darunter Boro
in the Box, der in Cannes präsentiert wurde. Er ist frei vom Leben des
Regisseurs Walerian Borowczyk inspiriert und knüpft an eine Retrospektive an, die Bertrand in Warschau
geleitet hatte. Bertrand Mandicos Recherchen sind polymorph (Texte, Fotos, Zeichnungen, Montagen) und
einige seiner Filme wie Living Still Life sind auch in Theaterwerkstätten ausgestellt. Er arbeitet außerdem
zusammen mit Elina Löwensohn an einem Projekt über 21 Filme in 21 Jahren, einer Betrachtung über die
körperlichen Zustände von Schauspielerin und Fiktion.
Bertrand sitzt zurzeit am Schnitt seines Kurzfilms The Return of Tragedy und feierte in Cannes gerade die
Permiere von Ultra Pulpe, einem Mittellangfilm mit Natalie Richard, Eline Löwensohn, Pauline Lorillard,
Vimala Pons und Lola Créton. Parallel dazu arbeitet er an mehreren Spielfilmen und Serien.
